When Your Pet Has Cancer...Angel Cat is a Survivor

I photograph mostly dogs as a function of my clients having dogs. I would love to attract more cat clients! I do love cats as well. I am a cat owner of an adopted tabby. My former fiance rescued a maine coon looking cat a year ago. My former fiance and I both adopted cats so we still each other's cats.

The maine coon looking cat that he rescued appeared on his doorstep a year ago on a very cold November day. He started by just leaving food out for this cat. Every day this cat would keep appearing at this doorstep and following him to his car. After a month my ex-fiance took in the cat since December and the bitter, winter temperatures had arrived. The cat was taken to the vet, and the vet discovered thru the chip that the cat had belonged to someone. The vet called that address and the phone number was no longer in service. My ex-fiance kept the cat and re-named the cat "Angel".  Both of us were horrified to think that this cute cat was either abandoned or thrown out of its former owner's house.

We realized this because weeks after my ex-fiance took in the cat, Angel was throwing up and having bowel problems indoors. She was making a mess in the house. Months after Angel was rescued, she was looking down and lethargic.  Both my ex-fiance and I knew that there was something wrong with her. I volunteer for a cat rescue group, and I know the look of a sick pet.  So my ex-fiance took Angel back to the vet for a check-up. After initial check-ups and ultrasound...the vet diagnosed that Angel had not just one but 3 forms of cancer!

I have to give my ex-fiance credit because most would have put her down after that diagnosis. But he did not want to give up on her. It has been 3 months of intense treatment on Angel by a premier NYC animal hospital where there are vet oncologists on staff.  Angel started with a spleen removal surgery. Then one of her back legs needed to be amputated because her bone cancer was a threat to the rest of her body. Now she continues to get chemotherapy and other drugs on a daily basis. Each day is a blessing. From time to time Angel has constipation problems and still throws up her food. My ex-fiance will not give up on her and continues to give her daily medication.

I will write updates about Angel and write new blogs as time goes by. I wanted to share Angel's story to give hope to those pet owners who are dealing with pets who have cancer. Like having a family member with cancer, the pain and emotion of seeing your pet deal with cancer is just as tough. Seeing my ex-fiance's dedication and love for a rescued pet (Angel is already about 5 yrs old) shows me how much people can bond and attach with an animal. Another observation for me is that pet owners really need to pay attention to how their pet is doing and pay attention to any changes in behavior. If Angel had been treated sooner (even before she was rescued by my ex-fiance), she may not have ended up with three forms of cancer.

For those who are dealing with a loved one's cancer, take each day as it comes. And don't forget to take care of yourself as the care giver. Love yourself too during these tough times. :)
